The results of the two DAM research missions sustainMare and CDRmare provide important information for the nature conservation assessment of the pollution of German oceans, as well as protected areas and protected assets, by anthropogenic activities in the sea and at the same time show new conflicts between use and nature conservation as well as possible options for action in the EEZ. Close communication between the missions and the BfN as the enforcement authority responsible for nature conservation in the German exclusive economic zone in the North Sea and Baltic Sea (EEZ) is therefore of great importance for the fulfilment of the tasks of the BfN.
The two missions of the German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM), CDRmare ("Marine Carbon Storage as a Path to Decarbonisation") and sustainMare ("Protection and Sustainable Use of Marine Areas"), investigate the potential of an expanded anthropogenic use of the oceans (CDRmare) on the one hand, but also the effects of anthropogenic activities on the oceans, as well as on protected areas and protected assets (sustainMare) on the other. The CDRmare research mission deals with various methods of technical and natural removal of CO2 from the atmosphere and with the risks of these methods for the marine environment. The sustainMare research mission develops options for action to support science-based decisions on the protection and sustainable use of the oceans. The resulting research results of both missions provide important information for the nature conservation assessment of the pollution of German oceans, as well as protected areas and protected assets, by corresponding anthropogenic activities in the sea and at the same time show new conflicts between use and nature conservation as well as possible options for action. On the part of the BfN, both missions are to be closely monitored in order to introduce nature conservation issues into the DAM missions and to make the results achieved within the framework of the missions accessible to the BfN.
In the project, the two research missions of the DAM sustainMare and CDRmare are to be accompanied by technical support in order to introduce nature conservation issues into the DAM missions and to make the results achieved within the framework of the projects accessible to the BfN. The communication between the BfN and the DAM research missions is to be channelled, the results of project meetings are to be summarised, the responsible BfN OEs are to be informed about current discussions and results, and the planning and implementation of workshops with the BfN is to be organised.
