Description:
Turnkey Contract Måndalen Skule [Måndalen School]

A procurement is being implemented to contract a turnkey contract who will be responsible for the engineering design and execution of a new school building, demolition of parts of the existing buildings, renovation of the gymnasium (B-building) and development of new outdoor areas at the school.

The new Måndalen school is based on pre-fabricated, standing concrete elements. The construction method is efficient and rational. The concrete facade will be painted white in order to give the building a pure and modern aesthetic at the same time as maintaining the weight and solidity of the material.

Horizontal window bands connect the building and define the two floors. Cladding of the bands between the windows consists of red and green wooden boards. The window openings are almost the entire width of the element, providing good light into the building. The window frames have a deep, grey colour and smooth finish that contributes to a clean aesthetic.

The composition of the different cladding boards is a significant contract to the white-painted concrete, with materials and colour associations related to forests, barns and agricultural land.

The south-east facade will be decorated with an abstract embellishment consisting of the same red and green cladding boards. Amongst the austere aesthetic, the surface cladding gives warmth and playfulness to the school building.

The entrances have a design that breaks with the rectangular main design both in shape and material. The various sloping angles play on the surrounding landscape with steep mountain walls and viewing plateaus. The chosen materiality provides warm entrances and mingling-zones, at the same time as uninsulated outdoor sheds are integrated into the structure.

The large common room and amphitheatre inside are the heart of the building and a large glass wall that provides a lot of natural light and brings the outside in, in the common areas. The glass section is framed in by a wooden structure that stretches over two floors and is the main element of the facade.

On the roof there is a structure that hides the mechanical room which is located on the roof to free up space in the outdoor area and within the building. The structure is shaped like a sculptural natural landscape that lies in the longitudinal direction of the building and is retracted from the wall.

The various entrances, framing and mechanical rooms contribute to the building being experienced differently from various angles, with varying angles, shadow effects and silhouette.
