Description:

Approx. 2 NM west of Fedje in Hordaland County, the German submarine U-864 was sunk by the British submarine Venturer. This took place 9.2.1945.

The submarine was heading to Japan with different war load, i.e. 1 857 containers with mercury that were stored in the keel of the submarine. Due to the torpedo attack, the submarine U-864 was divided in to sections and sunk to a depth of 145-160 metres.

Various reviews have been implemented regarding environmental measures, where the objective is to manage mercury pollutions from the submarine. As a result of these reviews, the Norwegian Coastal Administration has been allocated budgetary means in order to stabilise the geotechnical unstable slope in the wreckage position. The support fillings wreckage positions are estimated to approx. 100 000 m³, and these fillings shall be disposed in a safe and reliable manner at water depths from 175 to 165 metres. The laying will require a professional participant with experience from sub-sea rock distribution by use of fall pipe vessels. The assignment shall be implemented in a challenging maritime environment with a minimum distribution of polluted sediments. The distribution will be subject to a comprehensive environmental surveillance.
