On 29th July 2026, NHS England signalled a more structured approach to AI in clinical documentation, publishing a Prior Information Notice for an AI-Enabled Ambient Scribing Registry that will catalogue suppliers of AI-enabled ambient scribing products which qualify as medical devices and can show benefits in NHS care settings.
The notice confirms that NHS England intends to establish a supplier registry for AI-enabled ambient scribing products. Suppliers will be expected to demonstrate that their tools comply with medical device accreditation requirements and can provide evidence of benefits within NHS care settings.

Taken together, these local and international notices suggest that AI-enabled ambient scribing is moving rapidly from pilot status towards routine procurement.
The emphasis in NHS England’s registry on medical device accreditation and demonstrable benefits mirrors a wider shift in how AI-based clinical services are being bought.
