In this article we provide an overview over what is going on in the European IoT space, viewed through the lens of procurement notices, including a list of selected IoT contracts and Iot Tenders. 

Often, the Internet of Things (IoT) is usually thought of a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

While there is a lot of activity in the IoT space, many buying organisations are at different stages in relation to public procurement of IoT infrastructure and devices. Some are preparing analyses or looking for help with plans and procedures. Others are buying, implementing and rolling out very large programs. 

The maturity level does not seem to be related to any particular sub-category of IoT, but more a case of different readiness with different buying organisations.

Procurement notices for Internet-of-Things (IoT) is often related to one of the following sub-categories:

• Analyses, assessments, and consulting often in relation to planning, standards, preparation for future investments and security.
• Rail – devices and infrastructure
• Smart Meters – devices and infrastructure for intelligent reading of utility meters
• Health care – devices, infrastructure and training
• Intelligent Street lighting or Smart City infrastructure
• Training and education in relation to IoT
• Research and development

The Ministry of Employment, Business and Commerce in Andalucía, Spain, is looking for a supplier to undertake a project of raising international awareness of local businesses in general and their capabilities in IoT and Big Data in particular. The supplier must work with the individual local companies and help develop a development plan for them. (more info)

The Highland Council in Scotland is looking to significantly reduce the number of visits to sites across the highlands to measure water temperature and is looking for a supplier of an appropriate network infrastructure and IoT devices. (more info)

The Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment in Helsinki, Finland is looking for a provider of training services who can provide vocational training in IoT in relation to health technologies. (more info)

Békéscsaba, Hungary are looking for a supplier to design and deliver a SMART lighting infrastructure for the city. The IoT solution sought must include features such as lighting plans, integrated camera network, wifi hotspots and an appropriate IoT operating system. (more info)

Hull City Council, England, is looking for an organisation to supply, install, integrate and maintain an Integrated Smart City Platform (ISCP). One of the key objectives of the platform is to gather data that can be used to promote a better quality of life for residents. (more info)
