As the technical authority for public health services (ÖGD), the laboratory at LGA supports the health departments in Baden-Württemberg in combating HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In the 38 counseling centers for HIV/AIDS and other STIs located at health departments, both anonymous counseling and free testing for STIs are offered (cf. §§ 9 Abs. 1 ÖGDG in conjunction with 24 IfSG). The tests are sent to the laboratory at LGA for diagnostics (cf. § 16 Abs. 1 Nr. 4 ÖGDG). This large device is used to examine sample materials for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The examination includes sample purification, nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and detection of pathogens. The testing service, especially for Chlamydia (CT) and Gonorrhea (GN), is highly accepted. Annually, between 25,000 and 30,000 samples are analyzed at LGA. Therefore, the device must be continuously refillable with a throughput of > 250 samples in 8 hours and can be replenished with reagents and wash buffers during ongoing operations. Reagents are typically ordered monthly. Expected sample volume: - 25,000 samples/year for CT and NG, - 400 samples/year for Hepatitis C, if screening test in step diagnostics is positive. Since the lab's offerings are well received, there are plans to expand diagnostics to further sexually transmitted infections such as Mycoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis, and Hepatitis B. The device is to be offered in the form of a supply contract for reagents.
