The municipal utility company Flensburg GmbH operates a combined heat and power plant at Batteriestraße 48 in 24939 Flensburg for the generation of electricity and district heating.
At this location, heat storage 2 was commissioned in 2024. This serves the district heating supply of the city of Flensburg as a buffer storage with a capacity of approximately 29,000 m3 of treated district heating water.
Originally, this heat storage was connected in parallel to the heat storage 1 that has been operated at the site of the power plant for nearly 50 years. After the commissioning of heat storage 2, an assessment of the condition of heat storage 1 was conducted, which revealed that a renovation under economic conditions is not feasible. For this reason, heat storage 1 is currently being dismantled and will be systematically replaced by the newly constructed heat storage 3 at the same location.
Heat storage 3 is to be constructed as a non-pressurized heat storage with a steam cushion, identical to the heat storage 2 already operated at the site. This means that a heat storage capacity of at least 900 MWh with a maximum storage temperature of 98 °C and a return temperature of 65 °C (Delta T 33°C) in addition to a maximum charging and discharging capacity of 90 MW must be realized.
The anticipated dimensions of the storage are an inner diameter of approximately 42 m and a maximum fill height of about 21 m. Due to the parallel connection to heat storage 2, the same geodetic height of the maximum fill level must be achieved for both storages.
