As part of the new transport contract, S-Bahn Hamburg GmbH has committed to significantly increase passenger transport capacities by 2033. This can only be implemented gradually through frequency enhancements and the opening of new routes. This increase requires, among other things, an improvement in effectiveness as well as a technical adaptation of the existing infrastructure for maintenance, cleaning, and train formation or parking.


The goal of the project is the site development of the S-Bahn works in Elbgaustraße. The site development consists of the following projects:



  1. Construction of outdoor cleaning facility, graffiti hall, and outdoor area including parking lot and supply lines

  2. Renovation of office building and train hall

  3. Renewal of electrical engineering


The works, including the parking area, are expected to resume regular operations by the end of 2028.


The Elbgaustraße works (EGS) is located on the line 1225 “Hamburg-Holstenstraße, W 803 - Elmshorn, S-Bahn” between the Elbgaustraße station and the Krupunder stop. The S3 and S5 lines run there. The workshop area is situated in an island location between the two S-Bahn tracks and is accessed via a tunnel through “Alpenrosenweg”.


1) Outdoor cleaning facility and graffiti hall with parking lot


The existing outdoor cleaning facility (ARA) is outdated and must be replaced. A new hall with two tracks for outdoor cleaning and graffiti removal of the S-Bahn vehicles will be constructed in this area. The adjacent technical building includes a break room, showers, and changing rooms on the 2nd floor. The technical room for the equipment trades as well as the water treatment facilities for both halls are located on the ground floor and basement.


The supply for all buildings is to be done with PV and heat pumps.


The existing parking area will be redesigned due to the removal of the neutralization facility. This includes the transformer station, which will be built by DB Energie, a fence with gate system, and new outdoor lighting.


The parking lot will be used as a construction site setup area during the construction phase. Additionally, 1000 m² directly at the track of the adjacent allotment garden will be made usable as a construction site setup area and for the construction office.


2) Train hall and office building


The existing train hall (TW hall) and the office building are outdated and need to be upgraded. The supply for all buildings is to be done with PV and heat pumps to replace the current natural gas supply. The working pits of the tracks must be renewed, and an additional parking space should be reactivated. All technical components in the hall will be removed and upgraded to the latest technology. A storage room and a workshop will be newly constructed on the ground floor of the office building. On the 1st floor, there will be foreman offices, driver's break rooms, and additional office space. The 2nd floor will contain showers, changing rooms, and a large break room.


3) New electrical engineering


An island rectifier plant (IGW) (1200 V DC) is required for the projects cleaning center, office, and train hall. The IGW will supply two switching stations. On the one hand, the TW hall for vehicle testing and on the other for tracks 20 and 21 of the ARA and graffiti hall for traction current to drive the vehicles out. All railway electrical systems within the construction area are to be brought up to date, and the interfaces to the parking facility including tracks 10 and 11 are to be prepared for a separate project. Only preparatory measures for the railway power area will be taken for the parking facility, as the superstructure has already been renewed. The switch heating system from the overhead line is to be dismantled and replaced with a 50 Hz switch heating system. The interface to the new transformer station and the existing rectifier plant will be planned.
