Description:
The project involves building and operating a grid-connected battery storage system with an 8 MW capacity designed for reserve energy and energy trading, while reserving part of the capacity for critical startup energy for gas turbines.

The subject of the current project is the construction and operation of a grid-linked stand-alone battery storage system (BESS) with an electrical connection capacity of 8 MW and a usable storage capacity of 16 MWh, located on the customer's premises. The storage system is intended to be connected to the customer's own 5 kV medium voltage network via a medium voltage transformer and is designed to provide system-relevant reserve energy as well as participate in arbitrage trading.
The location for the battery storage system is on the power plant premises of STADTWERKE FLENSBURG GMBH (SWFL). The system's design is planned as a containerized or modular storage solution, consisting of battery systems, inverter units, transformer technology, protection and control technology, as well as the necessary ancillary equipment.
A significant feature of the project is the permanent reservation of a portion of the storage capacity for the customer's operational requirements. Specifically, 3.5 MWh of the total capacity is to be continuously reserved as secured startup energy for gas turbines. This energy reserve ensures reliable supply for critical startup processes and guarantees high operational availability of the generation plants, even in grid-critical situations or during external supply failures.
The remaining storage capacity is intended for participation in energy trading. The marketing of flexibilities in short-term electricity markets is particularly envisaged to generate revenues from price spreads and market-driven arbitrage opportunities. Furthermore, the battery storage system is intended to provide secondary control energy (aFRR) and thus achieve additional revenues from participation in the control energy market. The combination of operational security reserve and market-oriented multiple use aims for an economically optimized operation of the storage system.
