Description:
A new High Performance Computing cluster is needed to support simulation-based digital twins and AI applications, requiring high computational power, efficient parallel processing, and substantial storage capacity.

High Performance Computing (HPC)-Cluster

LOT-0001
Access - WH HPC-Cluster.
The newly procured High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster is intended to operate simulation-based digital twins with very high computational demands. Fully coupled casting process simulations are typically run over several days on more than 100 CPU cores. Similar requirements exist for simulations along the entire forging route. In addition, AI applications and modern simulation software will be used, which can be executed significantly more efficiently on GPU-based architectures. The results of the simulations will be linked to process data in a data management system and permanently stored for subsequent analyses. Therefore, the new computing system must at least achieve the computing power of the existing cluster with currently about 900 CPUs (Intel Xeon Gold 6132 @ 2.60 GHz), and preferably exceed it significantly, while also being equipped with multiple GPUs. Efficient parallelization of the computational load on the CPUs is essential. A storage system with a minimum capacity of 500 TB is required for the data management system. A larger storage capacity is highly desirable. The HPC cluster will initially be installed in the current computer room of Access on Intzestraße and is scheduled to move in 2028 to the new PLCA building at the research airfield Merzbrück. At the Intzestraße location, the existing water-cooled rack system is to be used. The available electrical connection power there is limited to a maximum of 28 kVA.
