The tender concerns the procurement of an AI Mammography Solution for Region Southern Denmark and Region Central Denmark. It is an IT system.
In the case of Region Central Denmark, it is merely an option. Region Central Denmark may choose or refrain from exercising the option for the procurement of an AI Mammography Solution.
As a result of an increasing population and rising average age, there is a rise in the occurrence of breast cancer in Denmark. A rise from approximately 4,800 cases in 2024 to about 5,310 cases of breast cancer in 2028 is expected. Early detection through breast cancer screening and treatment according to best practices is considered crucial to reduce breast cancer-related mortality and morbidity among women.
The breast cancer screening program in Region Southern Denmark performs approximately 70,000 screenings annually. Additionally, about 17,000 clinical mammography examinations are conducted yearly. It is expected that approximately 10% of these clinical mammography examinations will be performed as tomosynthesis. For Region Central Denmark, around 65,000 screenings and about 15,000 clinical mammography examinations are carried out each year.
Each screening examination consists of 4 X-ray images, with 2 standard projections per breast. In cases of previous breast cancer and breast-conserving surgery, a 3rd projection is added.
Currently, each individual X-ray image is reviewed by two independent mammographers. If there is disagreement, the images are reviewed again by a third examiner. There is generally a growing demand for mammography diagnostics. For instance, an increasing number of patients are referred for investigation in coordinated pathways for breast cancer due to an increase in the screening population as well as new investigation and treatment options.
Alongside the rising need for mammography examinations, there is a nationwide challenge with a shortage of mammographers. Artificial intelligence (AI) solutions based on deep learning techniques have shown significant progress in recent years in the field of medical image analysis, particularly concerning the detection of breast cancer in mammograms.
The offered AI solution will be implemented in the four hospital units of Region Southern Denmark (Odense University Hospital, Lillebælt Hospital, Southern Jutland Hospital, and Esbjerg/Grindsted Hospital), which carry out mammography examinations.
The purpose of procuring an AI Mammography Solution is thus
• to ensure that national requirements for breast cancer screening can be maintained in the future, and
• to free up mammographer resources for other tasks involved in breast cancer detection.
The solution must thus be able to support the “1st reviewer” in the mammography screening program and provide decision support in clinical mammography.
If Region Central Denmark were to exercise the option, the solution would need to be installed in the following hospital units: Aarhus University Hospital, Viborg Regional Hospital, and Randers Regional Hospital.
The tender comprises the following main sub-services:
• The AI solution itself
• Installation, setup, operation, and calibration of the system
• Training of radiologists, system management, and operational staff
• Maintenance and support of the AI solution
As part of the tendered contract, the following options are also offered to the contracting authority:
• Opportunity to use the AI solution in clinical mammography
• Support for tomosynthesis (3D) in mammography screening
• Purchase of additional screenings as per Annex 3
For further details on the options, please refer to the Draft Contract, Section 8, and Annexes 2 and 3.
The contract, including the requirement specification according to Annexes 1, 2, and 8, contains a detailed description of the tendered products.
Acceptance testing in Region Southern Denmark is expected to be approved in early June 2026.
