The Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) is planning the establishment of AI real laboratories in healthcare. The goal of the procurement for AI real laboratories is to accelerate the transfer of innovative AI systems into healthcare provision. It encompasses several projects.
One of these projects aims to assist institutions developing AI („AI developers“) in early identification, addressing, and establishment of compliant development processes concerning regulatory requirements. This objective will be primarily achieved by preparing and publishing reference documentation („blueprints“) for common documents required under a conformity assessment or certification process. BMG plans to support AI developers, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in developing such „blueprints“ in collaboration with relevant experts. A prerequisite for funding is that the resulting „blueprints“ are fully published to provide added value also for non-funded AI developers. The „blueprints“ developed within the framework of the project are intended to collectively address various highly relevant market challenges that currently hinder the marketing of innovative AI systems for healthcare.

Market Exploration for the Establishment of AI Real Laboratories by the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG).
End of Market Exploration The BMG will present the planned project to all interested (prospective) AI developers, companies, and public institutions during a two-hour virtual information session via WebEx. The session will take place on May 19, 2026, starting at 10:00 AM. Companies wishing to attend the session are requested to announce their participation by May 15, 2026, at 3:00 PM at KI-Reallabore-Gesundheitswesen@pd-g.de. After the presentation by BMG, participating companies will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Following the information session, BMG offers up to 8 individual discussions, each lasting 60 minutes. During the information session, BMG will announce the dates for these individual discussions. Companies wishing to have an individual session can communicate this along with a preferred time slot. If more companies express interest in an individual discussion than slots available, a lottery will determine the participants. BMG reserves the right to increase the number of individual discussions. After the market exploration, BMG will evaluate the feedback collected and consider the insights gained while strictly adhering to the principle of equal treatment in the further process of shaping the procurement procedure. Participation in the market exploration is voluntary, free of charge, and has no influence on subsequent participation in the procurement proceedings.
